Works from the early 1980s, grew out of the Journey/Voyage/Quest drawings, and began to focus more specifically on notions of genre in visual arts practice. This was further informed by an interest in the concept of genre as used in film studies. Paintings and drawings were initially structured around the simple juxtaposition of two opposing genre representations: still life with figure, figure with landscape, figure/still life with landscape. The challenge was to establish a dynamic interaction between these genre forms while attempting to achieve a sense of a pictorial coherence and completeness.
